I just got through watching Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer (1964) with my family, all of us jammed on the sofa together. I gotta say, after 49 years, it still holds up. And of course, I had to remind my boys that, in my day, you had one shot to see this on TV, and if you missed it, you had to wait a whole year to see it again. It struck me, though, that the North Pole was really a place of hatred and bigotry, at least at the beginning of the show. And Rudolph's father was really an asshole. Watching the way Rudolph was ostracized for being different, I had to wonder if this show is as much a product of 1960's race relations as it is about Christmas. Anyway, Mery Christmas to all, red noses or not.

The holiday season is all about showing the wort in us. It's the little things, really. Things like cutting in line or not letting you in despite there being plenty of room and you using your blinker. It brings the asshole in all of us close together for a little eggnog and some big-box store fist fights.

Quit over-analysing things. We all tend to do that as we become adults. Let the kids enjoy. I still put myself in child mode when the Wizard of Oz comes on.

I suppose I could be over-analyzing it. But you can't really take things out of the context of the times they were created. I certainly didn't tell my boys what I was thinking! I'm just glad they sat through it.
